You may have heard that the new site was coming and we are happy to announce it’s arrival! The main thing you need to know, as our blog readers is that our blog will no longer be at this address. The Great Thanksgiving Banquet at the Nashville Rescue Mission

The always-growing Nashville Rescue Mission expects to serve over 5,000 meals this Thanksgiving to its tenants and friends. Each and every one of the homeless or needy people who walk into the Mission on November 25th this year will be greeted, seated, and served by one of over two hundred volunteers who come to the mission to serve on Thanksgiving night. The banquet brings in many of Nashville’s homeless men, women, and children who may not have been to the Rescue Mission before. This gives Mission workers a chance to explain the many services provided here and hopefully help a whole new group of homeless people not previously exposed to the Mission.
Country music star Tracy Lawrence has taken this tradition of service to Nashville’s homeless community and turned it into an outdoor party with his Mission Possible Turkey Fry. 2010 marks the fifth year of this singer’s deep-fry extravaganza, which raised more than $10,000 for the Mission and collected over 600 turkeys last year. He always brings a few of his famous friends to the cookout, such as the Tennessee Titans Cheerleaders, Darryl Worley, and Brad Arnold of Three Doors Down. Special guests have not yet been announced for this year, but chances are he won’t disappoint. This year’s Turkey Fry will be the Tuesday before Thanksgiving (November 23rd) from 8 am to 5 pm, where anyone can come to purchase a fried turkey leg for $5 (all proceeds go to the Mission), or help fry, prep, and wrap the meats to be consumed at the Mission on Thanksgiving Day.
The overwhelming Nashville Rescue Mission Thanksgiving Banquet grocery list consists of 9,000 pounds of turkey, 5,000 dinner rolls, 1,000 pounds of potatoes, 100 gallons of gravy, 600 pounds of dressing, and 800 pounds of green beans, among other things. These numbers may seem daunting to someone wanting to donate to this special cause, but on average each meal costs only $1.92, so just a $10 donation could feed five people who otherwise might not be able to enjoy Thanksgiving dinner.

Extreme Home Makeover in Nashville airs this Sunday on ABC!

During the Nashville Flood in May, the Lighthouse Christian School, was uprooted and destroyed as it drifted down Highway 24. You may remember watching videos of the school float down the highway. In September, Ty Pennington and his Extreme Home Makeover Crew came to town and surprised The Sweatt Family who run the school! He told them that he and his would be spending the week in Nashville to rebuild the school! Many volunteers from the Nashville Community came out that week to help with the build. LP Building Company and Hardaway Construction were among many local sponsored who led the project. While most families who take part in this show enjoy a week away from their hometown on a cruise, beach trip, etc, this family had a stay-cation in Nashville! They enjoyed all the local and tourist spots including, the Ryman, where Carrie Underwood performed in the Grand Ole Opry. They also attended the TN State Fair with LeAnn Rimes and went to the recording studio with Keith Urban. Not to mention, these celebrities assisted in the build!! The Nashville Build Episode of Extreme Home Makeover is set to air on Sunday, November 14th at 7pm central. It will be a neat show! To see our local community come together for such a great cause will be a really neat thing to watch!

$2.5 Billion to be generated by development of Nashville Fairgrounds

The Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce has been doing a lot of research on how the use of the Fairground space could impact the local economy and increase jobs. They released an economic impact analysis yesterday on the fairground’s redevelopment, which concluded that a “mixed-use development including one million square feet of Class A office space would create opportunity for 6,500 jobs and $200 million in capital investment.” The total economic impact of this kind of development would be $2.5 billion.

Mayor Karl Dean said: “This is how you grow the city’s tax base. In just property taxes alone, one million square feet of office space would generate about $1.5 million a year. That $1.5 million more a year that we would have for things like schools, police, parks and libraries. The alternative is to begin using property tax money to support the existing events on the site.”

The current Fairground space isn’t large enough to hold a state fair that could generate this same kind of money. A lot of people want the fairgrounds to remain and be used for the state fair but the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce says that a fair on this particular space could only accomodate 350,000 people. These are not the kind of funds that need to be generated with this space when much more could be done to boost the economy of the community and create jobs for the people of Nashville.

The Chamber also said: “We have been able to attract more than 600 companies to the region over the last two decades – and create more than 230,000 jobs – because companies want to do business here, and people want to live here. But they need a place to locate. We believe the former fairgrounds property offers an ideal, development-ready site.”

Nashville Real Estate: October Home Sales

During the month of October, 1,495 homes sold, which is a 30.3 percent decrease compared to last years closings at 2,145. Year-to-date closings are at 17,433, which is a 1 percent decrease over the 17,598 closings reported through October 2009.

Median prices for homes and condominiums showed an increase again this month. The median price of a single-family residence was $173,525 and for a condominium it was $152,950. In October of 2009 a single family dwelling was $160,000 and for a condominium it was $144,000.

Without the tax credit from earlier this year, home sales continue to show a decrease compared to the same time last year. However, purchasing a home in Greater Nashville remains a good choice as interest rates are exceptionally favorable, the amount of inventory provides great choices.

Garth Brooks is now playing Nine shows for Nashville!

Garth has committed to playing 9 shows during the month of December. The shows will be held Dec. 16-17 and 19-22 at the Bridgestone Arena in downtown Nashville. Brooks will play two shows per night on Dec. 16th, 21st and 22nd.

Country star, Garth Brooks, broke records over the weekend after a whopping 140,000 tickets were sold in a day for a benefit concert which will provide aid to the victims of the Nashville floods. The huge amount of interest left the event coordinators with no other choice but to increase the number of shows from 1 to 9.

The sell-out marked the highest number of tickets sold in Tennessee in a single day. The ticket sale also surpassed the total number of tickets that were sold during a concert by King of Pop Michael Jackson in Knoxville. The total sell-out of the Garth Brooks show has already raised $3.5 million for charity that will go to The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee to aid the victims of the Nashville floods. During the benefit concert, the 48-year-old country music artist will perform with his wife Trisha Yearwood as well as his bands and a host of unnamed guests.

Garth Brooks, who is considered to be one of the most popular solo artists in the United States, has been away from the public-eye since 2001 spending time with his family. However, the noted country music star ended his retirement in the month of October last year with the announcement of a series of shows in Las Vegas. As we mentioned before, Garth said he wanted no money to go uncollected for the Nashville Flood Victims and he has remained true to his word!! The city of Nashville and beyond will be able to enjoy the live sounds of Garth Brooks thanks to his generous heart for Nashville and it’s community!

That’s right! It’s November and men are encouraged not to shave! Some people call it No-Shave November and others call it Movember. Movember is a worldwide movement where men are encouraged not to shave but instead, grow out a moustache: “Movember challenges men to change their appearance and the face of men’s health by growing a moustache. The moustache becomes the ribbon for men’s health, the means by which awareness and funds are raised for cancers that affect men. Much like the commitment to run or walk for charity, the men of Movember commit to growing a moustache for 30 days. The funds raised through Movember’s US campaign benefit the Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF) and LIVESTRONG, the Lance Armstrong Foundation.” Learn more about Movember Here!
